INTRODUCTION TO CODE CLUB NEW INITIATIVE IN BOROUGH OF CROYDON PART OF “TECH CITY” CONCEPT
Six volunteers from part of the Tech City Initiative sat for their inaugural meeting of Croydon Code Club on Thursday, 7 February 2013. The volunteers are all part of the “Croydon Tech City” movement which is a concept designed to turn Croydon into a hub for new technological business development.
As the “Tech City” movement gathers momentum in the Borough of Croydon, one of the aims of the group is to introduce a new “Code Club” into primary schools as an After School Club. “Code Club” will teach primary school children computer programming (also known as coding) in order to enhance their skill set.
The volunteers working to make “Code Club” a reality are:
● Simon Bird, Founder and Director of local business dotDigital Group plc
● Margaret Chatelier, Software Trainer
● Tara Green, Parenting and Children’s Coach
● Ally McKinlay, Healthy Living Project
● Monique Rebeiro, Director Lives Not Knives
● Fiona Stewart, Freelance Marketer
There will be a public meeting explaining how Code Club can be set up at a primary school local to you on Thursday 21 February 2013, at 7.30pm at Matthews Yard, Croydon, CR0 1FF. Any interested Head Teachers, Teachers, Governors, Parents are welcome to attend to hear more about this new initiative for school children.
All Primary School Heads and Senior Leadership Team members from Central Croydon have been personally invited to attend this meeting by the MP for Croydon Central, Gavin Barwell. He has said that the Tech City movement, of which Code Club is a part, is: “an incredible idea and has my full backing. Part of this involves engaging young people and crucially helping them to develop the skills they will need to compete in the future global marketplace.”
